| Tokugawa-en has been under major renovation, to make a historical and
cultural foothold where one can experience the early modern Samurai culture,
in preparation for the 2005 World Exposition, Aichi, Japan that will start
in March of 2005. This chisen kaiyuusiki [pond and promenade] Japanese
garden is based on the style of major daimyo [feudal loads] gardens of
the Edo era. A clear stream forms a waterfall and runs through valleys
before pouring into a pond that represents the sea; the garden symbolically
condenses the natural scenery of Japan. Further, the spring greenery, the
autumnal tints and flowers of peonies and irises make the garden enjoyable
throughout the year. The adjacent Tokugawa Art Museum (established in 1935) houses heirloom of the Owari branch of the Tokugawa House. At the core of the collection are the articles inherited from the Lord Ieyasu Tokugawa [the first shogun], as well as objects cherished by the successive head of the Owari branch, from the first Yoshinao (Ieyasuユs 9th child) down. The museum takes pride in the wealth, quality and fine condition of its pieces with 9 designated National Treasures including the world famous `Illustrate Tale of Genji', 52 registered Important Cultural Properties and 45 Important Art Objects. In addition, there is Hosa Bunko; one of the best libraries in Japan, whose collection comes to about 100,000 all together, from former collection of the Owari branch of the Tokugawa House, mainly consisting of about 2,000 pieces of Suruga Oyuzuribon [handed over books] from Tokugawa Ieyasu's private library, to fine old books in Japanese and Chinese etc. The three elements of Tokugawa Art Museum, Tokugawa-en and Hosa Bunko make up the historical and cultural foothold where one can enjoy the best of the Daimyo culture. |
